Alarming environmental degradation

DHAKA is one of the most polluted cities in the world and its pollution level has reached an alarming level. We are fast losing green patches and instead high-rise structures are occupying the skyline of Dhaka. The air of the city is unhealthy and polluted which is bad for people of all ages, particularly for the children and elderly people. Carbon emission should be immediately brought down to a tolerable level by using environment-friendly technologies and devices. At the same time, we should stop nature from being plundered in the name of urbanisation. A city should not be turned into a jungle of cement and concrete structures without a touch of greenery. Nearly seven million people in our country suffer from asthma as result of the existing environmental pollution. Environmental problems are found everywhere in land, air and water. We must be conscious about protecting the environment at any cost if we want a healthy life for all. We should plant more trees and restore the greenery lost. Deforestation is not civilisation and is costing us a high price in terms of soil erosion as is seen in Dhaka as well as elsewhere in the country. Only trees help stabilise the soil with their roots and reduce the intensity of natural calamities. Let us make our environment better so that we all can lead a better and healthy life.
